Jodhpur Tense After Clashes On Eid, Curfew, Internet Snapped: 10 Points – NDTV

The situation in Jodhpur remains tense.
Union Minister and Jodhpur MP, the BJP’s Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said the party will hold a massive protest if a police case is not filed by 7 pm today. Accusing the police of failing to take pre-emptive action, he said the protest will be held at Jalori Gate.
Stone-throwing and more violence were reported from several areas of Jodhpur on Tuesday before the police used force to bring the situation under control. The areas, however, remain tense.
Udai Mandir, Nagori Gate, Khanda Phalsa, Pratap Nagar, Dev Nagar, Soor Sagar and Sardarpura are among the areas where curfew has been imposed. Fifty-three people have been arrested in the case, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has said..
Internet services were suspended in Jodhpur to stop the spread of rumours, and the namaz for Eid was offered under police protection.
Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who belongs to Jodhpur, has accused the BJP of engineering the violence.
“This is the agenda of the BJP because inflation, unemployment has gone so far up, they cannot control it. So they are doing this deliberately to divert attention,” he told NDTV in an exclusive interview.
The trouble started over putting up of Eid flags. With a three-day Parshuram Jayanti festival in progress in Jodhpur, there were allegations that the flags were removed to make way for Eid flags.
Policemen fired tear-gas shells and used batons on Monday night to disperse the crowd, which also attacked the local police post. Stone-throwing left at least five policemen injured early on Tuesday, news agency PTI reported.
The clashes are the latest in a surge of communal violence and tension around the country. The last few weeks have seen clashes in at least five states – Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal – during Ram Navami, Hanuman Jayanti and Ramadan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the clashes has come under criticism from the opposition, the civil society and activists.
